About

Wunnamurra is situated 10 km’s south of Jerilderie in the Southern Riverina of New South Wales. We are on the Newell highway 300kms North of Melbourne  and 650kms south west of Sydney.

Wunnamurra was first settled in the 1840’s and was originally a large pastoral holding running Merino sheep on the flat Riverina plains. It was cut up many times, the last being in the 1950’s when irrigation was introduced to the area.  The property still has large areas of natural Box and Boree trees and some Bluebush.

We are a family business running a highly developed irrigation farm of 777 hectares drawing our water allocation from the Murray River through the privatised Murray Irrigation Limited system. Our paddocks are all laser levelled with full drainage and recycling of all water.

Our cropping programme consists of irrigated rice, wheat and canola and improved pastures of sub clover, lucerne and shaftal clover with rye grass. Our pastures are used for prime lamb production and opportunity hay sales.

Our Prime Lamb enterprise uses both Merino and Border Leicester Merino cross ewes lambing in April/May for September over the hooks sales. This gives us valuable feedback on how our rams are performing. Our 2007 drop suckers at 21 weeks of age dressed 27.13 Kilograms. Ten years ago we would have had to lamb in early March to get sucker lambs to this weight by September.

Our Poll Dorset Stud was started in 1987 to breed rams for ourselves, however it was quickly recognised that to breed the correct type of sheep for the growing lamb industry we needed a reasonable sized flock. We now run 250 ewes and use Artificial insemination every year so that we can access the best genetics possible.

Like everything else we produce on Wunnamurra we wanted to be able to measure our production, so we joined Lambplan which has given us the tools to record and measure Growth, Eye Muscle and Fat on our stud lambs at 100    and at 200 days of age as well as important Pedigree information.

We are committed farmers producing Rams for other committed farmers.
